General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) plans to demolish California natural gas-fired power plant

General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) plans to demolish a California natural gas-fired power plant it owns this year, after only one-third of its useful life, because the facility is no longer economically viable, Kallanish Energy learns. The 750-megawatt Inland Empire Energy Center (Ieec) uses two GE H-Class turbines. The closure illustrates the problems GE has experienced with its H-Class turbine. The steam-cooled H design takes hours to start, suffered technical problems and sold poorly, experts told Reuters. In a filing with the California Energy Commission, GE said the plant is “not designed for the needs of the evolving California market, which requires fast-start capabilities to satisfy peak demand periods (and to assist the burgeoning wind and solar power industries),” Reuters reported.
